It has been 32 years since “Return Of The Jedi” was released and 10 years since “Revenge Of The Sith”. By Christmas this year, we will be watching the first of the new Star Wars movies. The movie world is buzzing with excitement!
Before the official release of the new teaser for “The Force Awakens”, there were only rumors surrounding the plot, new and returning characters, the villains, the special effects and the director who would handle the new movie. When George Lucas sold the rights of Star Wars to Disney, many felt that the story would be watered down. Many fans were even expecting an R rated movie and a darker plot from the Star Wars world at some point in the future, however, as long the rights are with Disney this will not happen. Despite the new ownership, fans all over the world are excited to finally experience a new chapter of the popular Star Wars franchise.
When the first teaser trailer was released many diehard fans and new fans were shocked with excitement. The world stopped and everyone started talking about the new trailer. Fan forums were busy talking about the new X-wings, the rogue storm trooper, the new villain holding an innovative light saber, the Millennium Falcon and of course the familiar and majestic Star Wars Theme by John Williams. It was a total nerdgasm. A few months later and fans were being primed for what’s coming as the second trailer was released. We got a glimpse of Darth Vader’s mangled mask, more X-wings and the icing on the cake when Chewie and Han Solo appeared. Now that you’ve probably seen the two trailers (over and over again in hi-definition), let’s share some factoids about “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”.
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy, did not know the title of the new movie until he saw it online in November 2014. He learned about it during a panel interview at the annual Star Wars celebration. For the second teaser trailer, he only did the voice over a few weeks before is was unveiled.
In 1983, director, producer and Star Wars creator George Lucas had asked Mark Hamill to play an Obi-wan type character that would pass on the force to the next generation. When Hamill asked Lucas when it would be filmed, Lucas said 2011. With the upcoming release of the new movie this year, the director was not far off!
A new droid called BB-8 will be introduced in the movie, as you’ve probably seen in the trailers. Director J.J. Abrams actually presented a working BB-8 droid during a press conference for the movie.
The desert planet shown in the two trailers is not Tatooine, but is speculated to be the planet Jakku. Jakku will also be heavily featured in the new video game by DICE and LucasArts: “Star Wars: Battlefront“.
The female lead character, named Rey, is played by Daisy Ridley while the male lead, named Finn, is played by John Boyega. Rumors has it that Rey’s last name is Solo… We’ll let you make up your mind about that! Finn’s background character is not yet fully revealed, however most fans would agree he is a rogue Stormtrooper.
The new Chrome Trooper character will be played by Gwendolyn Christie. Her character wears a chrome mask, uses a light saber, is arrogant, demeaning and does not hesitate to kill. It’s a bit confusing that this character is using a light saber even though she’s not a Sith. The Chrome Trooper is named Captain Phasma.
Oscar Isaac’s character, Poe Domeron, is the new ace pilot of film. Domeron is described as the best pilot in the galaxy, although for the moment Han Solo still holds that title. In the trailers, he is seen piloting an X-wing and may or may not pilot the Millenium Falcon at some point.
Han Solo and Chewbacca are back. ‘Nuff said.
The new movie is set 30 years after the “Return of The Jedi” plot. The Rebels are now known as the Resistance and the remnants of the Galactic Empire are now known as the First Order. The Storm Trooper suits are slicker, and the overall atmosphere of the story and the Star Wars world is more menacing.
The ships have been tweaked and upgraded, much to the approval of diehard fans. For example, the X-wing that was used in the original trilogy is a T-65 Starfighter. The new movie will feature T-70 Starfighers, which are newer models from the same manufacturer, Incom. In this way, the ships in the Star Wars universe have not been modernised. They have the same look which will please fans, but possibly have more capabilities and innovations. Remember, it’s been 30 years on the Star Wars timeline; definitely time for some upgrades! The First Order will also have new ships and much more battle-ready Star Destroyers.
Director J.J. Abrams originally declined to direct the movie. However, when he started brainstorming with his crew and staff, he changed his mind and agreed to handle the new movie.
Darth Vader’s deformed mask is seen in the trailer and someone takes it in their hands. Andorra might be a setting in the new movie since paperback Star Wars releases stated that Sith lords were searching for the remains of Darth Vader.
The bad ass villain in the new movie is called Kylo Ren. The light saber/broadsword that Kylo Ren uses actually has embers emitting from the saber which we haven’t seen before. Kylo doesn’t seem to have the Sith title in the movie, indicating he is following a different path of the dark side.
It’s possible that the lead characters have found Luke’s light saber and they set out to find him. Luke’s involvement in the first film may be small and we expect to see him more in the next two films. Han Solo’s fate will also be revealed in the upcoming film.
Flame Troopers, Chrome Troopers and Snow Troopers are the new units of the First Order, who operate under a new red and black banner.
John Boyega (playing lead character Finn) was very careful not to let it slip that he was part of the new Star Wars saga. He was even very reluctant to inform his parents about the new movie and waited until the official photos had been uploaded to the Internet before saying anything. At least we know he’s dedicated!
Andy Serkis, famous for playing Gollum, King Kong and Ceasar, has established his own studio that specialises with motion capture technology. He and his studio staff will lend their talents for the motion capture sequences of various aliens in the new trilogy.
TIE fighters in the new movie are painted completely black as compared to the matte gray colour seen in the original trilogy.
R2D2 and C3-p0 will be present in the movie alongside the new BB-8 droid.
Plot theorists have suggested Luke Skywalker might be teaching or leading a new generation of Padawans and Jedi in the new trilogy. Remember in “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”, Anakin Skywalker killed all Padawans and the Empire’s Order 66 killed almost all Jedi.
If you haven’t seen it, here’s the most recent trailer:
We can’t wait until December! Are you ready for the latest instalment of the Star Wars franchise?
